Multimedia Story DRAFT
For my Multimedia story project, I plan to take a few videos of plants that I am most curious about in the local Victoria area in one day. I plan to use this adventure to fuel my interest in surviving outdoors by increasing my wilderness knowledge of local species, and to spend more time outdoors.
I want my project to focus on the new discovery of plants through the lens of my phone camera, and by taking videos of the plant in one of its current environments. I will need my phone and a notebook to take notes on the plant’s description. The shape of the story starts off with one plant and its origins, and then how it might connect or translate to another plant and its uses for survival.
I plan to start my day in my neighbourhood (Gordon Head area) and walk towards Mount Douglas to explore the plants of the forest. The collection of plants that I encounter will be documented with videos, and I will use plant identification apps to accurately identify the plants that I want to document and research.
What I would like to note specifically are the plants that could be used in other ways, like foraging to eat or for shelter. The documentation process will be part of a cumulative video vlog, where my plant findings will be shown on video and with photos, while I narrate with minimal text.
I plan to apply several of Mayer’s principles of Multimedia learning, including Signalling, Redundancy, Segmenting, and Modality, when putting together the narrative of the story.
One challenge that I might face is that many invasive species might look similar to the native species of plants, so accurately identifying them might be challenging. The plant identification apps used might not be completely accurate either.
