Reflections on ISTE and BC’s Digital Literacy Framework

Firstly, the ISTE reminds me of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator in some ways, because of the way they present each standard. I found 2.6.D. particularly interesting (Facilitator), “Modelling and Nurturing Creativity” since I would not think of that initially being prompted by Facilitator.

Information literacy is the most touched upon subject area surrounding technology, but information processing and management is often overlooked. I found this to be true myself when being tested during the BC Provincial Assessments. I find the student’s responsibility to understand the security implications of computer networks and client/servers as a Grade Ten or Twelve nowadays is more important than any because teenagers are very politically active and vocal online. Not only is their security important to protect but they should be cautious of the digital footprint they create.

Hopefully, as a teacher, I can integrate technology in my classroom in a way that supports these standards and familiarizes my students with these frameworks (inconspicuously). I’m looking forward to learning more about how to do that! I know it is not always easy listening to a PowerPoint, so making it more interactive and engaging and still conveying the information necessary will be a true challenge.
